Therapy Isn’t the Only Path to Healing, Here’s What Else Helps

Therapy can be life-changing, but healing doesn’t (and shouldn’t) happen in isolation. The way Western therapy is often framed, focused on hyper-individualism, can miss the full picture.

If therapy has ever felt like it wasn’t enough for you, that’s not a failure. Healing is relational. Healing is cultural. Healing is embodied.

A lot has happened the past few years! The highlights were:
-graduating with my masters June 2022
-starting my private practice almost a year ago (June 2023) and doing that part-time while still working at my community mental health agency
-completing my year long sex therapy certificate program (Sep 2023)
-presenting my group and i’s research at the APA Humanistic Psychology conference in Albuquerque (March 2023)
-getting confirmation our paper is being published in the Journal of Humanistic Psychology!

I often say our attention doesn’t always need to be *on* our body in order to be in our body.

Sometimes, “listening to our body” is not the most accessible or tolerable action we can take in any given moment. Sometimes it’s too much, and sometimes we need help from our environment to find our way back there.

So instead of always focusing on what we feel inside right away…. what might it be like to drop into the world around us?

The green trees outside our window..
The warmth of our cup of tea…
The support of the chair against our spine…
The movement of our body as it seats from side to side…
The beauty of the ocean crashing against the shore…
The grass beneath our feet…
The birds morning song filling our senses…
The smell of freshly baked cookies…
The comfort of a weighted blanket….

Sometimes, I don’t listen to my body, i listen to what I can be in contact with around me, what I notice around me. And sometimes, that’s exactly what brings me back into my body in a tolerable, supportive way ❤️

#Repost @lexyflorentina ・・・This Somatic Experiencing exercise called SIBAM stands for sensation, image, behavior (movement), affect, and meaning.

It supports our system in expanding racing or fixed thoughts and helps us move out of the mind and into the body. By exploring the spaces in which our experience can take shape (in image, emotion, sensation etc) we can slow down the pace at which our mind is overthinking or fixating and begin to bring the body into the conversation by asking: what else is here?

It’s an important question to ask when we find ourselves or our clients fixated on a certain thought, feeling or situation. Yes, we may be feeling or thinking X AND what else do we notice? What is happening around us, what changes through movement , through emotion, through image?

Getting curious about “what else” is here along with the thing that is taking up our attention can help to create space for more information to emerge about what our body really needs ❤️

“I’m sure we all have those anxious days to some degree…I know I do !! so here’s some gentle words to say to urself (out loud + in the mirror if you like!!) when you’re having a wobbly time 🙃

I used to think saying affirmations was a waste of time but every now and then, if I’m feeling *emotionally disregulated* or on the verge of an anxiety attack I’ll repeat these phrases under my breath until they feel true + more often than not, they really do help 🌷 sometimes I combine them with other coping strategies and sometimes I just do them on their own - I occasionally chop and change them to make them applicable to what I’m feeling, but I felt like these ones were the ones that come up most often 💫 the mind is a peculiar thing huh ???”
